Cal STAPH T-shirts and Upcoming Speaker Event with Dr. Mark Horton

We have two exciting announcements.  First, the long-awaited Cal STAPH t-shirts are now available to order!  Place your order by April 12th.  Second, we invite all Cal STAPH members to attend the upcoming speaker event with Dr. Mark Horton, former director of the California Public Health.  We are very lucky to have Dr. Horton, who will be speaking about the value of cross-disciplinary public health leadership and collaboration in outbreak investigation.  This should be a great event!  We decided to co-host this speaker in place of the Cal STAPH general meeting this month, so we hope to see you there!  See details, below.

2.  Speaker: Dr. Mark Horton – Tuesday, April 10th from 3:30-5:30pm

The Center for Health Leadership (CHL) Fellows in partnership with Cal Student Assistance for Public Health (Cal STAPH) and the Association of Public Health Infectious Disease Students (APHIDS) would like to invite you to an exciting, interactive session with Dr. Mark Horton, MD, MPH, former Director of the California Department of Public Health and State Public Health Officer, on the experience and value of cross-disciplinary public health leadership and collaboration in outbreak investigation.  Dr. Horton will use the H1N1 pandemic as an example of how all units of state, local and federal public health agencies and leaders across public health disciplines must work together to rapidly understand the epidemiology of a new public health threat and implement various measures and policies to protect the public.

More about Dr. Mark Horton:

Dr. Mark Horton is a pediatrician and former Director of the California Department of Public Health and State Public Health Officer; Director of Health for the State of Nebraska; Director of Public Health and Health Officer for the County of Orange; and Vice President of Community Programs at Children’s Hospital San Diego. He has 18 years of clinical experience and has held several academic appointments, in addition to his formal public health training.  Dr. Horton currently teaches PH 298.61: Politics, Policy, and Practice in Public Health for the Spring 2012 semester.
